Duplex Steel S31803 Bars
The alloy used to make Duplex Steel S31803 Bars has a dual microstructure of ferrite and austenite. The bars have remarkable resistance to corrosion, high strength and good toughness because of their balanced composition. Chromium (22.0–23.0%), nickel (4.5–6.5%), molybdenum (3.0–3.5%) and nitrogen (0.14–0.20%) constitute the chemical composition while carbon (0.030% max) is extremely low. Durability in harsh conditions is ensured by these qualities. These bars have 800 MPa (116,000 psi) tensile strength, 550 MPa (80,000 psi) yield strength, 15% elongation and 7.8 g/cm³ density. UNS S31803 round bars are available in ASTM A276 and A479 / ASME SA276 and SA479 standards, with sizes from 14mm to 300mm and lengths up to 6 meters. Thickness can range from 50mm to 6000mm long. They are supplied in round, square, hex and rectangular forms to suit varied requirements. A PREN value of 34 shows their strong pitting resistance. The alloy’s low carbon content prevents intergranular corrosion. Yield strength is almost double that of austenitic stainless steels, while weldability remains good with minimal risk of weld decay. The bars are also resistant to erosion, corrosion fatigue, and stress corrosion cracking in situations with hydrogen sulfide and chloride.
Duplex Steel S31803 Bars are used in industries that require mechanical strength and corrosion protection. They are common in oil and gas equipment, petrochemical plants, chemical processing, pulp and paper machinery, power generation, food processing, aerospace and refining. Melting and casting raw materials into billets is the first step in the manufacturing process. Hot rolling comes next. Following annealing which reduces stress and improves machinability, the bars can be polished, ground or cold drawn. For subsequent fabrication, this ensures accurate measurements and smooth surfaces.
