Haynes 230 Filler Wire

Metracore Alloys Private Limited supplies, stocks and exports Haynes 230 filler wire to fabricators, EPC contractors and plant maintenance teams in India and overseas markets. The filler wire is also designated as 230-W and classified as AWS A5.14 / ASME SFA-5.14 ERNiCrWMo-1 under UNS N06231. Stock is available in MIG spools, TIG cut lengths, reels and coils, covering 0.76 mm to 4.70 mm.

Haynes 230 is a nickel-chromium-tungsten-molybdenum alloy built for sustained service at elevated temperatures. Chromium at 20.0 to 24.0% forms the protective oxide film. Tungsten at 13.0 to 15.0% in the deposit stiffens the matrix against creep. A small lanthanum addition anchors the oxide film so it resists spalling through thermal cycling. Deposited weld metal meets a minimum tensile strength of 760 MPa (110 ksi).

Buyers specify this filler metal for oxidation resistance, thermal stability and resistance to carburising atmospheres. Gas turbine combustors, furnace internals, heat-treatment fixtures and reformer hardware all draw on those characteristics. The wire also joins UNS N06617.

Every consignment carries heat and lot traceability plus an EN 10204 3.1 certificate. Request the current diameter availability before finalising your welding procedures.

Tungsten stiffens the nickel matrix against dislocation movement, which maintains strength at temperature. Chromium builds the chromia film that resists oxidation and carburising gas attack. Carbon between 0.05 and 0.15% forms primary carbides that pin grain boundaries during long thermal exposure. Lanthanum, capped at 0.050%, anchors the oxide scale so it does not spall under cycling. Sulphur is held to 0.015% max and phosphorus to 0.03% max, since both promote hot cracking in nickel weld metal.

Seven characteristics decide where ERNiCrWMo-1 deposits earn their place. Strength and scale behaviour at temperature come first, followed by resistance to aggressive process gas, structural stability over long exposure, and ease of fabrication.

  • High-temperature strength: tungsten and molybdenum hold the deposit through extended elevated-temperature exposure.
  • Oxidation resistance: the chromia scale, stabilised by lanthanum, resists spalling under thermal cycling.
  • Carburisation resistance: low iron and a stable oxide film limit carbon ingress in reducing atmospheres.
  • Nitriding resistance: deposits perform in ammonia and nitrogen-rich process gas.
  • Thermal stability: the solid-solution structure resists embrittling phase formation over long service.
  • Creep resistance: solid-solution tungsten and molybdenum, backed by carbide precipitates at the grain boundaries, resist slow deformation under sustained load.
  • Weldability: the wire deposits by GTAW and GMAW with no preheat and interpass held below 93°C.

Haynes 230 Filler Wire Standards

Five standards apply here. The governing document depends on the filler form, welding process, base material and project requirements.

  • UNS N06231 identifies the filler metal chemistry in North American procurement systems.
  • AWS A5.14 classifies the bare wire as ERNiCrWMo-1, fixing its composition limits. The 760 MPa deposit minimum comes with the AMS 5839 route and the producer datasheet.
  • ASME SFA-5.14 mirrors it for pressure equipment built to the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
  • AMS 5839 covers bare welding wire and rod for aerospace procurement, where lot control is tight.
  • EN ISO 18274 S Ni 6231 designates the equivalent solid wire in European classification.

Customer specifications sit above these whenever a client imposes extra testing, packaging or approval conditions.

Haynes 230 Filler Wire Sizes

Wire and rod diameters are 0.76, 0.80, 0.89, 1.00, 1.10, 1.20, 1.60, 2.00, 2.40, 3.20, 4.00 and 4.70 mm. MIG spools stop at 2.40 mm, so 3.20 mm and above are available only as cut lengths, reels or coils.

The 4.00 mm and 4.70 mm sizes are cut lengths or coils only, since neither is offered on reels. Standard TIG lengths are 914 mm, packed in sealed tubes. Split quantities and non-standard lengths are available against confirmed enquiries.

Haynes 230 Filler Wire FAQs

What is the UNS number of Haynes 230 filler wire?

The filler wire carries UNS N06231 under the 230-W designation. Wrought base material carries UNS N06230, so the two shouldn’t be interchanged on a purchase order.

Seven properties define it: high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance, carburisation resistance, nitriding resistance, thermal stability, creep resistance and weldability without preheat.

Diameters range from 0.76 mm to 4.70 mm. MIG spools go up to 2.40 mm, and TIG cut lengths are 914 mm.

Yes. ERNiCrWMo-1 is classified for gas tungsten arc welding, with interpass temperature held below 93°C and argon shielding on a clean, iron-free surface.

Gas metal arc welding falls under the same AWS A5.14 classification. Spooled wire up to 2.40 mm supports spray and pulsed transfer.

Gas turbines, industrial furnaces, petrochemical reformers and aerospace hot-section hardware account for most demand.

AWS A5.14, ASME SFA-5.14, AMS 5839 and EN ISO 18274 S Ni 6231 apply, alongside UNS N06231. ASME Section IX groups the filler as F-No. 43.

An EN 10204 3.1 certificate accompanies each consignment, with heat and lot traceability. Certificates of Conformity and third-party inspections are arranged on request.
