What are Brass Pipe Fittings?

Brass pipe fittings are threaded and compression connectors that join, branch, reduce, or close pipe runs carrying water, gas, compressed air, and light oils. Brass itself is a copper-zinc alloy; copper consists of between 58% and 63% in our machining and forging grades, with zinc making up the balance, apart from small lead and iron additions. Brass doesn’t rust, since it contains almost no iron, and the surface takes on a thin protective patina. Its main corrosion risk is dezincification, where zinc leaches selectively from the alloy in hot, soft, or chlorinated water. DZR grades address this directly.

 

Parallel threads carry no sealing function themselves and seal against a washer, O-ring, or bonded seal at a flat face. Taper threads seal on the thread flanks as they wedge together. Compression joints seal through an olive squeezed onto the tube. Machinists rate free-cutting brass at 100 on the machinability index, the reference point for the whole scale, so threads cut cleanly and tool life stays long. Decades of service are normal in non-aggressive water for a correctly installed fitting; soft, hot, or heavily chlorinated supplies call for DZR grades.

Brass Pipe Fittings Grades

Four copper-zinc grades cover most enquiries. The choice turns on machinability, forgeability or saline exposure.

Brass C36000

C36000 is the free-cutting brass covered by ASTM B16/B16M, holding 60 to 63% copper with 2.5 to 3.0% lead. Its machinability rating of 100 is the benchmark other copper alloys are rated against.

Forging brass C37700 runs at 58 to 61% copper with 1.5 to 2.5% lead. It hot-forges cleanly under ASTM B283, which suits fittings that need sound grain flow.

 

  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  

Known widely as Naval Brass, C46400 adds 0.5 to 1.0% tin to a base of 59 to 62% copper. The tin slows dezincification in saline water, so marine and coastal fittings specify it.

C46500 is the arsenical naval brass, carrying 0.02 to 0.06% arsenic alongside the same tin addition, with copper at 59 to 62% and lead held to 0.20% max.

Brass Pipe Fittings Standards

No single standard governs every brass fitting. The applicable specification follows the alloy, the fitting type, the manufacturing route and the intended service. ASME B16.15 applies to cast copper alloy threaded fittings in Classes 125 and 250, and ASME B16.18 covers cast copper alloy solder joint pressure fittings; both specify cast alloys, with limited wrought substitution under B16.15. On the material side, ASTM B16/B16M governs free-cutting brass rod in C36000 and C36010, ASTM B21/B21M governs naval brass rod and bar including C46400, ASTM B124/B124M covers forging rod including C37700 and C46400, and ASTM B283/B283M covers hot-pressed die forgings including C37700, C46400 and C46500. EN and ISO documents apply to projects written to those systems.

Brass Pipe Fittings Sizes

Brass fittings are supplied from 1/8″ to 4″ NPS, equal to DN 6 through DN 100. Buyers order by nominal bore or outside diameter. Threaded items are called out by thread size and form rather than wall thickness, and pressure rating follows the fitting class. Sizes outside this band are quoted against the drawing.

What Are the Common Grades Used for Brass Pipe Fittings?

Metracore supplies C36000, C37700, C46400, and C46500. C36000 is the fastest for machining, C37700 is suitable for hot forging, and both types of naval brass are designed to withstand saline exposure.

Plumbing, water supply, HVAC, gas piping, industrial process lines and irrigation systems all use brass fittings. Marine work requires a tin-bearing grade.
