What Are SMO 254 Pipe Fittings?

SMO 254 pipe fittings are piping components made from UNS S31254 super austenitic stainless steel, used to connect, redirect, branch, or reduce pipelines in corrosive service. The alloy carries high levels of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, with nitrogen added for extra pitting resistance and strength. Compared to conventional stainless steel, this grade delivers a step change in chloride resistance: its pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) exceeds 42. Yield strength is roughly 50% higher than 316L. Weldability stays good with over-alloyed filler.

ASTM A403 SMO 254 pipe fittings are most commonly specified in purchasing documents for general projects, while ASME SA403 SMO 254 fittings are specified for boiler and pressure vessel service. Dimensions are generally according to ASME B16.9 for factory-made buttweld fittings and ASME B16.28 for short-radius elbows and returns. MSS SP-43 covers light-wall corrosion-resistant fittings, while MSS SP-75 covers high-test wrought buttweld fittings for pipeline service.
