Grade 702 (UNS R60702) is commercially pure zirconium. The specification requires zirconium plus hafnium at 99.2% minimum, with hafnium capped at 4.5%; hafnium stays in because it matters for neutron absorption, not corrosion.
Protection rests on a zirconium dioxide film that forms the instant bare metal meets air or water and regrows wherever fabrication scratches it off. Behind that film, the metal withstands hydrochloric acid at all concentrations up to the boiling point, provided the acid is free of ferric or cupric ion contamination. Sulphuric acid up to about 65% at the boiling point, and to 70% at moderately reduced temperature and nitric acid up to 70% concentration at temperatures approaching 200°C. Hot caustic solutions cause no measurable attack either, so one grade covers acid and alkali circuits alike.
