Aluminium Bronze Pipe Fittings
Metracore Alloys manufactures aluminium bronze pipe fittings with tightly controlled chemistry, verified in our in-house laboratory, where we run PMI on every heat before release. We work in two aluminium-bronze families: nickel-aluminium bronze C63000, equivalent to CuAl10Ni5Fe4, and single-phase iron-aluminium bronze C61400.
Mechanical performance drives most orders. C63000 fittings reach a 620 MPa minimum tensile strength with a 345 MPa yield point, so wall sections stay compact at fire main and hydraulic pressures. Contact faces resist galling through repeated bolting and threading; the hard aluminium-bearing surface won’t pick up or seize against mating steel. Under cyclic pump loading, fatigue strength holds through years of vibration.
Abrasion tolerance in sediment-laden flow and a copper matrix that discourages marine growth complete the case. Buttweld manufacture starts at 1/2″ NB and extends to 24″ NB, while forged items with socket or threaded ends cover 1/2″ through 4″. Inform us about your required line sizes and pressures, and our engineers will match grade and schedule to the duty.
What Makes Aluminium Bronze Pipe Fittings Unique?
What sets these fittings apart is how aluminium transforms a copper base: a thin alumina film builds on the surface and regenerates the moment damage occurs. The film rebuilds faster than collapsing cavitation bubbles can strip it away. Aluminium needs 6.0 to 8.0% in C61400, which stays single-phase, and 9.0 to 11.0% in C63000, where the higher content produces a duplex structure. Iron refines the grain and raises strength. Nickel, held at 4.0 to 5.5% in C63000, suppresses the phases most vulnerable to selective attack in chloride-bearing water. Manganese supports hot workability.
Strength arrives without brittleness. Both grades machine to specification, though C63000 needs rigid setups, slower speeds, and carbide tooling. TIG and MIG welding use ERCuNiAl filler for C63000 and ERCuAl-A2 for C61400, with preheat and interpass temperature control per procedure. Fouling organisms rarely colonise the copper-rich bore, so internal diameters and flow rates stay close to design through service. Procurement documents sometimes list the same products as aluminium bronze pipe connectors.

Chemical Composition
The table lists published limits for the two wrought grades. Copper makes up the balance; figures are weight percentages.
| Element | C61400 (%) | C63000 (%) |
| Copper (Cu) | 88.0 – 92.5 | Balance |
| Aluminium (Al) | 6.0 – 8.0 | 9.0 – 11.0 |
| Iron (Fe) | 1.5 – 3.5 | 2.0 – 4.0 |
| Nickel (Ni) | – | 4.0 – 5.5 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 1.0 max | 1.5 maximum |
| Silicon (Si) | – | 0.25 max |
| Zinc (Zn) | 0.20 maximum | 0.30 max |
Note: C61400 copper is specified as a range; C63000 copper is the balance after specified elements.
Mechanical Properties
Mechanical property values are as per ASTM B150 minimums for rod and bar feedstock. Finished fitting properties are verified per batch and may differ following hot forming and forging. C61400 trades some strength for higher ductility.

| Tensile Strength | 620 MPa min (90 ksi) |
| Yield Strength (0.2% offset) | 345 MPa min (50 ksi) |
| Elongation | 10% minimum |
| Hardness | 96 HRB (typical) |
| Density | 7.58 g/cm³ (0.274 lb/in³) |
| Melting Range | 1035 – 1054°C |
Advantages of Aluminium Bronze Pipe Fittings
Eight operating gains justify the alloy premium wherever aluminium bronze fittings replace leaner copper grades.
- Seawater corrosion resistance keeps metal loss in clean, flowing seawater low enough that designers can reduce corrosion allowances relative to leaner copper alloys.
- Erosion and cavitation near pump discharges leave little mark on the surface.
- Wear resistance protects threads and gasket faces through repeated assembly cycles.
- Load-bearing capability follows from the 620 MPa tensile floor.
- Fatigue strength withstands well under pulsating pressure and structural vibration
- Maintenance demands stay small; there’s no coating or lining system to renew.
- Marine performance remains dependable through swings in salinity, temperature, and flow rate.
- Extended service life defers replacement budgets well past brass or tin bronze equivalents.
