Copper forms the base of the alloy. Copper reacting with seawater forms a cuprous oxide film. Nickel at 10% or 30%, with controlled iron and manganese, makes that film tougher and more adherent. That film matures over the first few months of exposure to clean seawater, up to about 3 months, depending on water temperature. Copper ions released from the surface also suppress macrofouling, so barnacles and mussels struggle to colonise the bore.

Minimum tensile strength in the annealed condition runs from 260 MPa for C70600 up to 360 MPa for C71500, per ASTM B466. Shipyards, desalination plants and coastal power stations specify the alloy for one reason: chloride-bearing water attacks carbon steel and pits austenitic grades, while copper-nickel holds its surface.

Cupro Nickel Elbows

Cupro-nickel elbows redirect flow. We supply 45° and 90° elbows in long and short radius patterns, plus 180° return bends for condenser loops.

Cupro Nickel Tees

Branch connections call for tees. Equal tees carry one bore across all three ends, while reducing tees drop the branch for a lower-flow takeoff.

Cupro Nickel Reducers

Two patterns cover diameter changes. Concentric reducers hold both bores on a shared centerline. Eccentric reducers offset that centerline. Fitted flat side up on a horizontal pump suction, the top of the line stays level, so air cannot collect at the change in diameter.

Cupro Nickel Crosses

A cross takes one line in and splits it three ways at a single junction. On seawater distribution headers, it saves space against two tees set close together.

Cupro Nickel Couplings

Couplings join two pipe sections end to end and hold that joint under working pressure. Our ASME B16.11 range covers full, half and reducing patterns.

Cupro Nickel Caps

Cupro-nickel caps close a pipe end. Fitters weld them onto terminations, dead legs and future tie-in points needing a permanent seal rather than a removable closure.

Cupro Nickel Unions

Unions provide a joint that comes apart again. When a pump or instrument needs removal, a union lets the crew break the line without cutting pipe.

Cupro Nickel Forged Fittings

Forged cupro-nickel fittings start as bar or billet worked under pressure, which closes porosity and aligns grain flow with the fitting shape. Class 3000 and Class 6000 ratings suit small-bore lines.

C70620 and C71520 are the welding-quality equivalents of the two grades, with tighter ceilings on carbon, lead, zinc, phosphorus and sulphur.

Higher nickel buys higher strength and a higher velocity ceiling. Annealed minimum tensile figures follow ASTM B466.

We hold two Cupro Nickel grades, along with the specification variants inside each one.

Cupro Nickel 90/10 (CuNi 90/10)

Cupro Nickel 90/10 carries 9.0 to 11.0% nickel against a copper balance, with 1.0 to 1.8% iron and up to 1.0% manganese under UNS C70600. Iron matters more than its share suggests: it strengthens the oxide layer and lifts erosion-corrosion resistance. Design velocity sits near 3.5 m/s in clean seawater.

Cupro Nickel 70/30 (CuNi 70/30)

Higher nickel buys higher strength. CuNi 70/30, designated UNS C71500, runs 29.0 to 33.0% nickel with 0.40 to 1.0% iron. Its minimum tensile strength of 360 MPa sits about 100 MPa above the 90/10 grade, and it tolerates 4.5 m/s.

CuNi 90/10 and CuNi 70/30 Variants

Variants inside both grades differ by product form and by the specification they are certified against. C70620 and C71520 are the welding-quality equivalents, with tighter ceilings on carbon, lead, zinc, phosphorus and sulphur so weld metal stays sound during fabrication.

Cupro Nickel Pipe Fittings Connection Types

Three connection options cover the fittings we supply.

Butt Weld

Butt weld connections join pipes and fittings through a full-penetration weld across matched bevels. The joint carries the full pipe rating and presents a smooth internal bore. Marine cooling headers run on this method.

Socket Weld

Socket weld fittings receive the pipe end into a machined recess, then take a fillet weld outside. For pipes up to 4 inches in diameter, use socket weld fittings in situations where a butt weld is impractical.

Threaded

Threaded fittings screw together with NPT threads to ASME B1.20.1. BSP threads to ISO 7 are available on request. Instrument tappings, drains and vents suit them where welding is restricted.

Cupro Nickel Pipe Fittings Standards

Applicable standards shift with the fitting type, manufacturing route, grade and service. ASME B16.9 governs dimensions for wrought butt-welding fittings; ASME B16.11 covers forged socket-weld and threaded items.

Material requirements sit in a separate family: ASTM B466 for seamless copper-nickel pipe, ASTM B467 for welded, ASTM B151 for rod and bar, and ASTM B171 for plate. ASTM B366 applies to factory-made wrought welding fittings and addresses lightweight patterns. A purchase order should name the dimensional standard and the material specification separately.

Copper-nickel is not the right answer everywhere. Polluted, stagnant seawater carrying sulfides interferes with the film. Ammonia does not crack copper-nickel the way it cracks brasses, but it does lift general corrosion rates and can cause denickelification under heat transfer conditions.

What Are Cupro-Nickel Pipe Fittings Used For?

These fittings connect, redirect, branch, reduce and terminate copper-nickel piping in seawater service. Marine cooling circuits, ballast lines and offshore firewater systems take most of the volume shipped.

Two grades cover most supply: CuNi 90/10 (C70600) and CuNi 70/30 (C71500). Welding-quality variants C70620 and C71520 go into fabricated spools.
