What are 17-4 PH Stainless Steel Forgings?

17-4 PH Stainless Steel Forgings are components produced by deforming heated UNS S17400 billet under controlled compressive force. Forging refines the grain structure and closes internal voids, so the finished part carries higher toughness than a casting.

 

Heat treatment sits at the centre of how this alloy works. Mills solution anneal the forging at 1040 °C, then age it: 1 hour at 482 °C. This produces the high-strength H900 condition, while 4 hours at 621 °C gives the tougher H1150 condition. Copper-rich precipitates form during ageing and block dislocation movement, raising strength sharply. Machinability is excellent after overageing to H1150. Its strong corrosion resistance ensures a long service life in critical applications.
