What Are SMO 254 Forgings?
SMO 254 forgings are components shaped from solid UNS S31254 stock under compressive force, using presses or hammers rather than moulds. Production begins in the melt shop, where the alloy is refined to 0.020% max carbon before the ingot is cast, then forged to shape. Deformation between the dies refines grain, closes porosity and aligns flow lines.
The grade belongs to the 6Mo family of super austenitics; molybdenum and nitrogen drive its corrosion behaviour.
