What are 904L stainless steel forgings?
A stainless steel forging is a component shaped by compressing hot metal between dies rather than casting it. 904L billets are hot worked between 950°C and 1150°C, then solution-annealed and water-quenched to restore the passive layer. The press closes internal voids and aligns grain flow with the part geometry. Castings keep porosity and coarse dendritic structures in the section. A forged 904L part therefore offers higher strength and longer fatigue life than its cast equivalent.
The alloy itself is fully austenitic. High nickel, backed by molybdenum and copper, resists acids and chloride media. Weldability is good because carbon sits at 0.020% max, which prevents carbide precipitation at the weld. Machinability responds to rigid setups and sharp tooling.
