Why Use Alloy 286 Forgings?
Alloy 286 has an austenitic iron-nickel-chromium base that is age-hardened with titanium, which makes it different from conventional heat-resistant stainless steels. During ageing, titanium and nickel form fine gamma prime precipitates that resist deformation, unlike ordinary austenitic grades that soften. Useful strength holds up to around 700°C.
Forging improves the material further. Hot working refines the grain and aligns flow lines with component geometry, raising fatigue and impact performance. Resistance to oxidation and scaling, strong creep and stress rupture behaviour, and good weldability complete the profile. Above 700°C, nickel-based superalloys are the better choice. The grade shouldn’t be specified past that limit.
