XM-19 Stainless Steel Forgings
What Are XM-19 Stainless Steel Forgings?
XM-19 stainless steel forgings are components shaped under compressive force from a solid XM-19 (UNS S20910) billet. The alloy draws its strength from dissolved nitrogen held at 0.20 to 0.40% in the matrix. That one addition lifts annealed yield strength to a 380 MPa minimum, nearly double the figure for conventional austenitic grades. Forgings are supplied solution annealed. Where higher strength is required, we supply cold-worked bar to ASTM A479 for components machined from bar rather than forged. Procurement documents sometimes list these parts as Nitronic 50 stainless steel forgings.
Forging beats casting or plate cutting in three ways: continuous grain flow, refined microstructure, and closure of the porosity that casting leaves behind. High strength arrives with high toughness. Chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen give excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Good galling and wear resistance lets mating parts run dry in harsh service.

Key Features
Eight characteristics define this grade once it reaches forged form.
- Yield strength reaches 380 MPa minimum in the annealed condition, nearly double the 205 MPa minimum of conventional austenitic grades such as 304 and 316.
- Pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride media exceeds standard grades.
- Superior galling and wear resistance permits metal-to-metal contact without lubrication.
- Toughness remains outstanding at low temperatures, which suits cold seawater service and sub-zero process duty.
- Fatigue strength holds up under cyclic loading.
- XM-19 welds with common austenitic processes using matched filler, with no post-weld heat treatment required. Controlled heat input and interpass temperature preserve nitrogen in the weld metal.
- A long operational lifespan follows from pairing strength with corrosion resistance.
- The grade performs reliably in aggressive industrial environments.
Manufacturing Standards & Quality Assurance
Every forging we supply is produced to a recognised standard and verified before shipping. We forge to ASTM A182 XM-19, while ASTM A473, ASTM A276 and ASTM A479 cover related product forms. ASTM A182 XM-19 forgings carry EN 10204 3.1 certification on every consignment.
PMI testing confirms the chemistry of every heat, and ultrasonic testing (UT) screens for internal defects. Mechanical testing proves tensile, yield and elongation values; ferrite testing, dimensional inspection and visual inspection close out the process. Third-party witness inspection can be arranged.
Advantages of XM-19 Stainless Steel Forgings
Six practical gains follow from specifying this grade in forged form.
- XM-19 offers higher strength than 304 and 316, with a minimum yield of 380 MPa compared with 205 MPa for the standard grades and 170 MPa for the L variants.
- Chloride corrosion resistance substantially exceeds 300-series grades, suiting flowing seawater and brackish service.
- Wear and galling resistance improves markedly over standard grades.
- Components last longer in corrosive duty, deferring costly replacement programmes across plant equipment.
- Maintenance costs drop because parts resist the wear and corrosion behind most interventions.
- Demanding industrial applications sit comfortably within its service envelope.
