Stainless Steel Forgings

Metracore Alloys Private Limited supplies stainless steel forgings to fabricators, valve builders, and EPC contractors. As a stockist and exporter based in India, we source forged material from qualified mills and hold it against project schedules. The range covers open-die and closed-die work plus rings, shafts, discs, blocks, and bars. Grade selection drives most of the decision: 304 and 304L for general service, 316 and 316L against chlorides, 321 and 347 for elevated temperature, 410 and 420 for hardness, and 17-4 PH, which has a minimum tensile strength of 1,310 MPa in the H900 condition. Forging aligns grain flow with the profile, lifting toughness and fatigue resistance above a casting. Specification sheets carry size, heat treatment, finish, and testing scope, while ASTM A182, A473, A965, and A370 govern most orders. We quote by outside diameter, bore, length, and finished weight. Production follows material selection, heating, forging, heat treatment, machining, and inspection. Stainless steel forged components end up in oil and gas, petrochemical, power, aerospace, and marine services. Every consignment ships with certificates traceable to the heat number.

Stainless Steel Forgings Grades

Nine grades cover most forged stainless steel demand across austenitic, martensitic, and precipitation-hardening families.

  • 304 / 304L: Austenitic, roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Carbon caps at 0.08% for 304 against 0.030% for 304L, which suits welding.
  • 316 / 316L: Molybdenum at 2 to 3% lifts pitting resistance in chloride media. Offshore platforms specify these.
  • 321: Titanium stabilised at not less than five times the combined carbon and nitrogen content, capped at 0.70%. Titanium ties up carbon before chromium carbides form across the 425 to 815°C band.
  • 347: Niobium does the same job at not less than ten times the carbon content and 1.10% maximum. Refinery service favours it where weld repairs are likely.
  • 410: Martensitic, with 11.5 to 13.5% chromium. Quenching and tempering give strength that austenitic grades cannot reach, though corrosion resistance is milder.
  • 420: Carbon starts at 0.15% minimum against 12 to 14% chromium, allowing higher hardness.
  • 17-4 PH: UNS S17400, with 15.0 to 17.5% chromium and 3.0 to 5.0% copper. Ageing to H900 gives 1,310 MPa minimum tensile strength.

One caution worth stating plainly: 410 and 420 don’t belong in warm chloride service. Specify 316L and accept lower hardness.

Why Choose Metracore Alloys Private Limited?

Our position as a stainless steel forgings supplier in India rests on stock depth and documentation quality. We hold forged rings, discs, blocks, and bars across nine grades and place custom items against confirmed drawings. Material arrives with certificates traceable to the heat number. Third-party inspection, ultrasonic examination, and intergranular corrosion testing follow whatever the order specifies. Export consignments are shipped in wooden crates marked by grade and heat. Teams weighing a stainless steel forgings manufacturer in India against a stockist usually find that lead time, not unit rate, decides it.

Technical Details of Stainless Steel Forgings

Stainless Steel Forgings Standards

Five ASTM specifications carry most of the forged stainless steel procurement. ASTM A182 governs forged flanges, fittings, valves, and pressure parts for high-temperature service under F-prefix designations such as F304L. ASTM A473 is broader, covering austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, and duplex forgings for general, low-temperature, and high-temperature use. Boiler and pressure vessel forgings in austenitic grades fall under ASTM A965. Mechanical testing follows ASTM A370. Age-hardening grades such as 17-4 PH fall under ASTM A705, and the applicable document depends on grade family, product form, and design code.

State the following at the enquiry stage, because no supplier can firm up a price or a delivery date without them:

  • Outside and inside diameters for rings
  • Length, width, and height for blocks
  • Radial thickness on ring profiles
  • Shaft diameter and overall length
  • Rough forged and finished weight
  • Supply condition: as forged, rough or proof-machined

Benefits of Stainless Steel Forgings

Ten characteristics explain why designers keep specifying forgings:

  • Grain flow follows the profile, raising strength along the load path
  • Toughness holds up under impact and shock loading
  • Porosity and shrinkage cavities are absent, unlike castings
  • Chromium sustains passive-film corrosion resistance
  • Fatigue life improves where grain flow is oriented correctly
  • Sections carry sustained loading at moderate temperature
  • The grade range spans cryogenic duty in the austenitic types through elevated-temperature service in the stabilised ones
  • Coded pressure equipment accepts forgings for critical duty
  • Custom shapes follow the buyer’s drawing
  • Properties repeat from batch to batch

None of this is automatic. Performance depends on grade, forging method, heat treatment, design, and service conditions.

FAQs

What are Stainless Steel Forgings?

Stainless steel forgings are components shaped by compressive force applied to heated stainless steel above its recrystallisation temperature. The process closes voids and orients grain flow.

Nine grades cover standard supply: 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 347, 410, 420, and 17-4 PH.

Forged sections span 50 mm to 3,000 mm in outside diameter and 1 kg to 5,000 kg per piece. Anything larger needs press capacity confirmed.

Oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, aerospace, marine, and pharmaceutical plants use them. Typical parts include valve bodies and turbine discs.

ASTM A182 applies to forged pressure piping components, A473 to stainless forgings generally, A965 to austenitic pressure forgings, and A705 to age-hardening grades.

Yes, custom forgings can be supplied against a buyer’s drawing, covering dimensions, grade, heat treatment, finish, and inspection scope. Tooling lead time applies to closed-die work.
