Nitronic Pipe Fittings Grades

  • Nitronic 40 (UNS S21900): Known as 21-6-9, pairing 19 to 21.5% chromium with 8 to 10% manganese. Toughness holds at cryogenic temperatures.
  • Nitronic 50 (UNS S20910, XM-19): Containing 20.5 to 23.5% chromium and 1.5 to 3% molybdenum, this alloy offers better corrosion resistance than 317L and is approved by NACE MR0175 for use in sour environments.
  • Nitronic 60 (UNS S21800): With about 4% silicon and 8% manganese, it resists galling better than any regular austenitic grade.
  • Nitronic 30 (UNS S20400): Chromium of 15 to 17% with low nickel suits wear-driven, mildly corrosive duties at a lower cost.

Nitronic Pipe Fittings Standards

No single standard governs every Nitronic fitting. The right reference follows grade, pattern, manufacturing method and the dimensions your piping class calls for.

  • ASME B16.9: butt-welding fitting dimensions, NPS 1/2 to 48.
  • ASME B16.11: forged socket weld and threaded fittings, Class 2000 to 9000.
  • ASTM A403: wrought austenitic stainless piping fittings, XM-19 included.
  • ASTM A182: forged fittings, where F XM-19 designates Nitronic 50.
  • ASTM A276: bar stock for machined fittings.
  • MSS SP-43: lightweight fittings in Schedule 5S and 10S.

Butt-weld Nitronic fittings run from NPS 1/2 to NPS 48, matching DN 15 to DN 1200. Forged patterns cover NPS 1/8 to NPS 4 across Class 2000 to 9000. Wall thickness follows the schedule ordered, from SCH 5S through XXS. Tolerances and pressure ratings follow the standard named on the order.

Three end preparations cover the piping designs we supply.

  • Butt Weld: bevelled ends meet under a full-penetration weld. Process headers and abrasive lines use it.
  • Socket Weld: the pipe seats in a machined recess, sealed by a fillet weld, up to NPS 2.
  • Threaded: NPT and BSP ends suit low-pressure lines and sites without hot work permits.

Six properties explain the premium over 316L. The yield strength, which is nearly twice that of 304L, enables thinner walls or greater design pressure. Nitronic 60 removes cobalt hardfacing from sliding parts, while Nitronic 50 outperforms 317L in chlorides. Properties shift across grades, so one won’t answer every duty.
