Alloy Forgings

Metracore Alloys Private Limited manufactures and supplies alloy forgings to fabricators, EPC contractors, valve builders and plant maintenance teams across India and export markets. Stock covers alloy steel and nickel alloy materials in open-die and closed-die form. A forged 4140 shaft resists fatigue cracking better than the same chemistry machined from an oversize bar, and the gap widens wherever the part changes section. Machining cuts straight through the flow lines at every shoulder and collar. Forging carries them round the contour instead. Alloy steel grades cover a wide strength range after quench and temper, from around 750 MPa in 4130 to above 1200 MPa in heavily sectioned 4340, with the achieved figure set by tempering temperature and section thickness. Material is supplied as-forged, rough-machined or proof-machined, with the heat treatment condition confirmed at the order stage. Mill test certificates travel with every despatch.

Why Choose Metracore Alloys Private Limited for Alloy Forgings?

We manufacture steel forgings to ASTM A788 and nickel alloy forgings to ASTM B564, and every consignment carries a material test certificate stating the heat number, chemistry and mechanical results. The heat treatment condition is confirmed at the order stage rather than assumed. Send your drawing for a quotation.

Alloy Forgings Grades

Grade selection splits across two families on this page: alloy steels and nickel alloys. Stainless forgings carry their own chemistry limits and standards and are covered separately.

Alloy Steel Grades

4140 carries 0.38 to 0.43% carbon with 0.80 to 1.10% chromium and 0.15 to 0.25% molybdenum, reaching 850 to 1000 MPa tensile after quench and temper. 4130 sits at 0.28 to 0.33% carbon and welds far more easily. 4340 adds 1.65 to 2.00% nickel on top of chromium and molybdenum, and it is that combination that lets the grade harden right through heavy sections, landing anywhere between 24 and 53 HRC depending on the temper; 8620 carburises well. 8630 answers to quench and temper connectors and hangers.

Don’t specify 4140 for welded assemblies unless preheat between 200 and 300°C is practical.

Inconel 625 holds 58% nickel minimum with 20 to 23% chromium, 8 to 10% molybdenum and 3.15 to 4.15% niobium plus tantalum, resisting pitting in chloride brines. Inconel 718 holds 50 to 55% nickel with 17 to 21% chromium, 2.8 to 3.3% molybdenum and 4.75 to 5.5% niobium plus tantalum, and hardens by precipitation rather than by cold work, so the ageing cycle after solution treatment sets its final strength. Inconel 600 carries a minimum of 72% nickel and serves up to 1093°C. Inconel 601 lifts chromium to 21 to 25% and adds 1.0 to 1.7% aluminium, forming a scale that resists spalling.

Stainless forgings belong to a separate material family with their own chemistry limits and standards. Austenitic and duplex enquiries go to our stainless steel forgings range.

Alloy Forgings Standards

ASTM A788 sets the common requirements that every steel forging must meet, covering melting practice, forging classification and certification. ASTM A668 governs carbon and alloy steel forgings for general industrial use. ASTM A350 and A182 apply where the enquiry calls for piping components rather than general forgings, and both work through their own grade systems. A350 Grade LF2 is impact tested at -46°C. Confirm the required specification grade at enquiry, as it may differ from the machining grades listed above, and nickel alloy forgings fall under ASTM B564. EN, DIN and AMS govern European and aerospace orders.

Alloy Forgings Sizes

Quotations are built from outside diameter, inside diameter, length, width, height and section thickness. Rings need OD, ID and face height together, while shafts take diameter and length, and blocks need all three axes. Forging weight matters as much as any linear dimension here. Press capacity, not geometry, sets the practical ceiling.

FAQs

What Are Alloy Forgings?

Alloy forgings are components shaped by controlled mechanical deformation of heated alloy material, producing the required geometry and a refined grain structure. Fatigue strength exceeds that of castings in the same chemistry.

Alloy steels and nickel alloys: 4140, 4130, 4340, 8620, 8630, plus Inconel 600, 601, 625 and 718.

Open die forging shapes metal between unenclosed tools, which suits large or one-off sections. Closed die fills a shaped cavity instead, giving repeatable dimensions across a batch at the cost of tooling investment.

The oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, aerospace, automotive, and marine industries drive most of the demand for demanding applications.

ASTM A788 covers general requirements, with A668, A350 and A182 applying by product type. Nickel forgings follow ASTM B564.

Yes. Alloy Forgings can be made according to the customer’s drawing with grade, tolerances, heat treatment conditions, and testing requirements, and we’ll quote against it.
