Cupro Nickel Forgings
Metracore Alloys Private Limited manufactures and supplies Cupro Nickel Forgings to shipyards, fabricators, and seawater system contractors across India, ensuring the necessary documented process control for both domestic and export markets. The range covers CuNi 90/10 (UNS C70600) and CuNi 70/30 (UNS C71500) in open-die and closed-die forms: rings, shafts, discs, bars and blocks. Nickel content governs how each alloy behaves. C70600 holds 9.0 to 11.0% nickel with 1.0 to 1.8% iron, while C71500 holds 29.0 to 33.0% nickel with 0.40 to 1.0% iron. Both build a protective oxide film in seawater. The copper matrix also releases ions that help prevent marine growth, which is why forged copper-nickel is used in shipbuilding, offshore platforms, desalination trains, and condensers where austenitic stainless steel doesn’t work well because of chloride corrosion. Dimensions follow customer drawings, rough-machined or finished. C70600 and C71500 are supplied against ASTM B151 for rod and bar and ASTM B171 for plate and sheet. Where the order calls for a forging certified to a forging specification, note that ASTM B124 and B283 list the welding-quality copper-nickels C70620 and C71520 only, so those grades are the route to a B124 or B283 certificate.

Cupro Nickel Forgings Grades
Two grades dominate forged copper-nickel supply. The choice turns on seawater velocity and required strength.
Cupro Nickel 90/10 (UNS C70600, W.Nr. 2.0872, CuNi10Fe1Mn)
Cupro Nickel 90/10 (UNS C70600, W.Nr. 2.0872, CuNi10Fe1Mn) holds 9.0 to 11.0% nickel with 1.0 to 1.8% iron and up to 1.0% manganese. Iron gives this grade its resistance to erosion-corrosion in moving seawater, and it suits piping and marine hardware at a lower cost than the 30% nickel alloy.
Cupro Nickel 70/30 (UNS C71500, W.Nr. 2.0882, CuNi30Mn1Fe)
Cupro Nickel 70/30 (UNS C71500, W.Nr. 2.0882, CuNi30Mn1Fe) holds 29.0 to 33.0% nickel with 0.40 to 1.0% iron. For design velocities above approximately 3.5 m/s, it is recommended to specify 70/30 instead of 90/10, as the 70/30 grade can tolerate flow rates up to around 4.5 m/s before impingement attack becomes a concern. The limit depends on pipe bore, so larger diameters tolerate more. Both grades handle dilute non-oxidising acids. Oxidising acids, aerated acid conditions, and any streams carrying ammonia or sulphides exclude the use of copper-nickel, so it is important to confirm the fluid analysis before making a specification.
Cupro Nickel Forgings Standards
Four ASTM specifications carry copper-nickel forged products, each covering a different form. B151/B151M covers rod and bar, including C70600 and C71500. B124/B124M covers forging rod, bar and shapes, listing welding grades C70620 and C71520. B283/B283M covers hot-pressed die forgings, and B171/B171M covers plate and sheet for pressure vessels.
ASME SB-151, SB-171 and SB-283 are the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code counterparts of the matching ASTM specifications. EN 12420 covers copper alloy forgings, with the copper-nickels designated CuNi10Fe1Mn and CuNi30Mn1Fe. Naval and customer-specific specifications are quoted separately.
Cupro Nickel Forgings Sizes
The size for a forging is not one number, so quote against the dimensions defining the part. Rings need an outside diameter, an inside diameter and a height. Shafts need diameter and length; discs take size and thickness; and blocks take length, width and height. Both rough and finished weights are important because the difference between them determines the machining allowance.
Applications of Cupro Nickel Forgings
Seawater service accounts for most demand. Shipbuilding uses forged copper-nickel for sea chests, valve bodies, propeller sleeves and hull fittings, where fouling resistance extends cleaning intervals. Offshore platforms use this alloy for firewater ring mains and lift pumps.
Desalination plants and seawater piping rely on the alloy’s tolerance of chloride-rich water. Heat exchangers and condensers take forged tube sheets, baffles and water box components, with 70/30 where velocity or contamination is higher.
Pumps and valves take a steady share: impeller hubs, casings, stems, seat rings and closures. Chemical and industrial plants use forged copper-nickel alloys only when the process fluid is compatible with a copper-base alloy.

Cupro Nickel Forgings FAQs
What grades are commonly used for Cupro Nickel Forgings?
CuNi 90/10 (UNS C70600) and CuNi 70/30 (UNS C71500) account for nearly all forged copper-nickel supply. Welding-quality variants C70620 and C71520 are available where fabrication needs restricted residuals.
Why are Cupro Nickel Forgings used in marine applications?
Copper-nickel resists seawater corrosion through a self-repairing oxide film. The copper in Cupro Nickel helps prevent marine organisms from attaching, and adding 1.0 to 1.8% iron in C70600 helps protect against erosion and corrosion from moving seawater.
Which forged forms are available in Cupro Nickel?
Rings, shafts, discs, bars and blocks cover standard enquiries produced by open-die or closed-die forging. Custom profiles follow supplied drawings.
How do ASTM standards apply to Cupro Nickel Forgings?
ASTM B151 governs rod and bar, B124 covers forging stock, B283 covers hot-pressed die forgings, and B171 covers plate and sheet. The applicable standard follows product form, not the alloy alone.
Can Cupro Nickel Forgings be customised to the drawing?
Yes, custom dimensions, machining allowance, heat treatment and inspection scope can all be set against a supplied drawing. Confirm grade, finished weight and supplementary testing at enquiry.
