Inconel 601 is a nickel-chromium alloy carrying 1.0 to 1.7% aluminium, and that one addition decides how the surface behaves at extreme temperatures. Aluminium forms an alumina sublayer beneath the chromium oxide scale, and that inner layer anchors the whole film against spalling. The strengthened scale stays bonded through repeated heating and cooling instead of cracking away; oxidation resistance extends to 1204°C in still air. Pressure-retaining service is governed by ASME B31.3 allowable stresses, which fall sharply above roughly 900°C; consult the applicable code for design temperature limits.
Radiant tube circuits, kiln pipework, and heat-treatment lines run on exactly that mechanism. Strength holds deep into the service range too. Carbon pickup from carburising atmospheres proceeds slowly, and hot oxidising chemical streams leave the pressure boundary intact through cyclic duty.
