Tantalum Forgings
Metracore Alloys is a leading manufacturer and global supplier of high-purity Tantalum Forgings, delivering precision-engineered components tested for extreme corrosion resistance, mechanical strength and tight dimensional tolerances. Chemical processing plants, pharmaceutical producers, semiconductor fabricators, and nuclear contractors share a critical operational challenge: sourcing components that withstand aggressive, hot acid duty without contaminating high-purity process streams.
Tantalum melts at 2996 °C and withstands most mineral acids at service temperatures up to 150 °C. That combination makes the refractory metal the default choice for aggressive chemical environments. High-purity tantalum forgings provide exceptional chemical inertness, high mechanical strength, and structural integrity under high-temperature and severely corrosive operating conditions.
Orders for ASTM B365 Tantalum Forgings can add ASTM B708 and ASTM B521 where plate or tubular forms apply. Our forgings eliminate internal porosity and refine grain structure to withstand aggressive media such as concentrated hydrochloric, nitric, and sulfuric acids up to 150°C (302°F).
What are Tantalum Forgings?
Tantalum Forgings are components worked to shape from high-purity tantalum billet under compressive force. Forging closes internal porosity and aligns grain flow with part geometry, raising toughness in thick sections.
Purity governs every production stage. Feedstock for Pure Tantalum Forgings comes from electron beam vacuum melting (UNS R05200) or powder metallurgy sintering (UNS R05400). Working temperatures stay tightly controlled, since tantalum absorbs oxygen rapidly above 300 °C, and forgings are annealed under vacuum. Strength persists at temperatures that soften standard grades. The result is a ductile, tough component whose stable oxide film gives long life in acid service.

Key Features
Tantalum forgings combine extreme chemical inertness with outstanding thermal and mechanical integrity, outperforming conventional corrosion-resistant alloys in eight key performance areas:
- Resistance to strong acids comes from a self-healing tantalum pentoxide film. Hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric and phosphoric acids don’t attack it at temperatures up to 150 °C.
- The 2996 °C melting point ranks among the highest of any engineering metal.
- Thermal stability keeps dimensions steady through repeated thermal cycles.
- Ductility reaches 25% min elongation when annealed, allowing cold forming without cracking.
- Oxidation resistance holds at moderate temperatures; above 300 °C in air, oxygen pickup accelerates.
- Purity of 99.95% min keeps interstitial contamination below embrittlement levels.
- Cold working behaviour is close to mild steel, shortening machining cycles.
- Operational life in acid service runs for decades. Hydrofluoric acid and hot alkalis are the exceptions where tantalum shouldn’t be specified.
Manufacturing Standards & Quality Assurance
Recognised international standards govern each forging we supply. Orders for ASTM B365 Tantalum Forgings can add ASTM B708 and ASTM B521 where plate or tubular forms apply. An EN 10204 3.1 certificate accompanies every consignment.
Our quality assurance process follows six strict inspection stages before release: PMI testing for grade confirmation, ultrasonic testing (UT) for internal flaw detection, and chemical analysis for elemental purity, followed by mechanical, dimensional, and visual inspections to ensure full drawing compliance.
Advantages of Tantalum Forgings
Combining inherent material purity with the refined grain structure of the forging process yields six distinct performance advantages for high-demand operations:
- Corrosion resistance in aggressive acids removes the main failure mode.
- Structural integrity exceeds cast equivalents because forging closes porosity.
- Strength at elevated temperatures holds where other alloys soften.
- Service life in decades cuts replacement frequency.
- Maintenance stays low; the oxide film repairs itself.
- Performance in critical industrial processes stays consistent batch to batch.
