Zirconium Forgings

Metracore Alloys Private Limited is a zirconium forgings supplier serving chemical processing, pharmaceutical and speciality chemical plants in India and overseas. Our range covers Zirconium 702 (UNS R60702) and Zirconium 705 (UNS R60705) in ring, shaft, disc, bar and block form. Grade 702 runs commercially pure at 99.2% minimum zirconium plus hafnium. Minimum yield strength is 207 MPa. Grade 705 carries 2.0 to 3.0% niobium and reaches 483 MPa minimum tensile strength. Both build a self-repairing oxide film. That film is what holds off hydrochloric acid across the entire concentration range.

Zirconium alloy forgings arrive in the annealed condition ASTM B493 calls for. Sizes run from small valve internals to blocks of 500 kg, machined to drawings where required. Open die tooling suits one-off rings and blocks, while closed die tooling holds repeat dimensions on valve and pump components. Chemistry and tensile checks are performed as per the ASTM B493 standard before dispatch. Chemical processing plants, fertiliser units and acid-service pump builders account for most of what we move. Every despatch carries its mill test certificate.

Zirconium Forgings Standards

ASTM B493 and its ASME equivalent, SB-493, set the requirements for zirconium forgings. Material must be supplied annealed, and every lot needs two tension tests plus two chemistry tests for hydrogen and nitrogen on the finished product. Remaining chemistry is covered by the manufacturer’s ingot analysis. Other forms sit elsewhere: ASTM B550 for bar and wire, ASTM B551 for strip, sheet and plate, and ASTM B658 for pipe. ASTM B351 covers nuclear service bars. The governing specification depends on grade, product form, forging method and end use.

Zirconium Forgings Sizes

Capability varies with the forging method and press tonnage, so we don’t quote a size until we’ve reviewed the drawings.

  • Outside diameter: 25 mm to 1500 mm
  • Inside diameter: finished bore plus allowance
  • Length: up to 3000 mm on shafts and bars
  • Width and height: to drawing on blocks
  • Thickness: 10 mm to 300 mm on discs
  • Ring dimensions: diameter, bore, face height
  • Shaft diameter: 25 mm to 400 mm
  • Forging weight: 0.5 kg to 500 kg
  • Rough and finished dimensions: priced separately

Why Choose Metracore Alloys Private Limited?

Buyers approaching a zirconium forgings manufacturer or trader need two things above price: grade certainty and paperwork that holds up. As a zirconium forgings stockist, we hold 702 and 705 in rings, discs, shafts, bars and blocks. Every piece ships with a mill test certificate carrying heat and lot traceability against ASTM B493. Annealing, stress relief, machining and NDT are arranged to order. Send your drawing for a firm quotation.

Zirconium Forging Grades

ASTM B493 recognises three grades, R60702, R60704 and R60705, and we work mainly with the first and the last.f

Zirconium 702 is commercially pure zirconium, with a minimum zirconium content of 99.2% plus hafnium. Tensile strength starts at 379 MPa, yield at 207 MPa, and elongation at 16%. The grade handles hydrochloric acid at all concentrations, including above the boiling point, and sulphuric acid up to 70%. It isn’t the right choice where ferric chloride, cupric chloride, wet chlorine or fluoride ions appear because those species attack the oxide film and start pitting.

Zirconium 704 (R60704) carries 1.0 to 2.0% tin, giving 413 MPa tensile strength and 14% elongation. We supply it against firm orders.

FAQs

What Are Zirconium Forgings?

Zirconium forgings are components shaped by the hot mechanical working of zirconium or zirconium alloys. The deformation closes cast porosity, so forged parts outperform castings in pressure service.

Zirconium 702 and Zirconium 705 take the bulk of the forging demand. Zirconium 704 is included in the same standard.

Zirconium resists clean hydrochloric acid at all concentrations, including above the boiling point, which few engineering metals apart from tantalum manage. The picture changes once oxidising impurities are present. Ferric or cupric ions at a few hundred ppm can trigger pitting and stress corrosion cracking, so the acid analysis matters as much as the concentration. Sulphuric service holds at 70% for 702.

Closed-die or open-die forging manufactures rings, shafts, discs, bars, and blocks in standard forms.

ASTM B493 and ASME SB-493 cover zirconium forgings directly, setting chemistry and tensile requirements for R60702, R60704 and R60705. Bar, plate and pipe fall under B550, B551 and B658.

Yes. Zirconium forgings can be supplied as per the customer’s drawings covering dimensions, machining allowance, heat treatment and test scope. Send media details too, and we’ll confirm grade suitability before quoting.
