Zirconium Pipe Fittings
Metracore Alloys Private Limited manufactures and exports Zirconium Pipe Fittings for corrosive process piping, alongside our range of flanges, forgings and fasteners supplied across India and overseas. Our fittings cover Grade 702, Grade 704 and Grade 705, with 702 accounting for most shipments and 704 quoted against project specification. Butt weld patterns are supplied to ASTM B653 and ASME SB-653, dimensioned to ASME B16.9 or MSS SP-43. Socket weld and threaded patterns follow ASME B16.11 dimensions, machined from material certified to ASTM B493 or ASTM B550.
Zirconium forms a tight protective oxide the moment it meets air, and that film is what carries it through hydrochloric acid at all strengths up to boiling, sulphuric acid to 70% in Grade 702, and hot organic acids that thin most stainless steels over time. Strength sits behind the chemistry. Grade 702 holds a minimum tensile strength of 380 MPa (55 ksi) and a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa (30 ksi). Grade 704 sits at 415 MPa (60 ksi) and 240 MPa (35 ksi). Grade 705 lifts both to 550 MPa (80 ksi) and 380 MPa (55 ksi). Those figures come from the raw material specification the fitting is made from: ASTM B658 for pipe, B550 for bar or B493 for forgings, ASTM B653. Chemical processing units, pharmaceutical plants, petrochemical refineries, fertiliser producers and speciality chemical manufacturers make up most of our enquiry volume.

Zirconium Pipe Fitting Grades
Zirconium 702
Zirconium 702, or UNS R60702, is commercially pure zirconium with 99.2% minimum zirconium plus hafnium. It handles nitric, hydrochloric, sulphuric, acetic and formic acid duties and accounts for most of the fittings we ship.
Zirconium 705
Alloying with 2.0 to 3.0% niobium gives Zirconium 705 (UNS R60705) its higher strength, but corrosion behaviour is narrower than 702. Sulphuric acid: 702 holds at 70% concentration; 705 stops near 55%. Above 70% nitric, 705 cracks under lower stress. Match the grade to the service, not the pressure class. Stress relief after welding is mandatory.
Other Zirconium Grades
Zirconium 704 (UNS R60704) is a zirconium-tin alloy carrying a 413 MPa minimum tensile strength. ASTM B653 recognises all three grades, and we quote 704 according to the project’s specifications.
Zirconium Pipe Fittings Standards
ASTM B653 governs seamless and welded zirconium butt-welding fittings across R60702, R60704 and R60705, covering elbows, returns, caps, tees, reducers and lap-joint stub ends. Butt weld dimensions come from ASME B16.9 or MSS SP-43, with wall thickness set by ASME B36.19. Forged patterns follow ASME B16.11, with material certified to ASTM B493 or ASTM B550. Which specification reaches the certificate depends on grade, fitting type, manufacturing route and size.
Zirconium Pipe Fittings Sizes
Butt weld fittings run from 1/2 inch to 24 inch NPS, matching DN 15 to DN 600. Wall thickness follows the schedule: a 6-inch fitting measures 3.40 mm at SCH 10S and 7.11 mm at SCH 40S. The outside diameter matches the connecting pipe, since B16.9 fittings are ordered by nominal size and schedule rather than bore. Forged patterns cover 1/8 inch to 4 inch NPS.
Zirconium Pipe Fittings Connection Types
Three connection options are used across our zirconium range.
Butt Weld. Bevelled ends butt against the pipe and take a full penetration weld, leaving no internal ledge. Both weld faces need inert gas shielding, as zirconium absorbs oxygen and nitrogen above 400°C.
Socket Weld. Lines up to 2-inch NPS use socket-weld fittings joined by one external fillet weld. Fit-up runs faster, though the internal gap suits general process duty rather than high-purity service.
Threaded. Threaded forged fittings serve instrument tapping points and low-pressure connections where welding access is restricted.

Applications of Zirconium Pipe Fittings
Why Choose Metracore Alloys Private Limited for Zirconium Pipe Fittings?
Our fittings programme covers ten patterns across three grades, from 1/2 inch to 24 inch NPS. Every consignment ships with an EN 10204 3.1 Material Test Certificate carrying the heat number, chemical analysis and mechanical results traceable to the melt. We arrange tensile testing, corrosion testing, positive material identification and dye penetrant examination, with third-party inspection on request. Fittings are left sealed in polythene inside wooden crates, since a scratched oxide layer becomes a future failure point. Share your line list for a complete fitting schedule.

FAQs
What Are The Common Zirconium Grades Used For Pipe Fittings?
Three grades appear in ASTM B653: R60702, R60704 and R60705. Grade 702 covers most corrosion duty, and 705 serves lines needing 550 MPa minimum tensile strength.
Why Are Zirconium Pipe Fittings Used In Chemical Processing?
Zirconium can withstand hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric, acetic, and formic acids in situations where stainless steel and nickel alloys would corrode. The choice of grade depends on the type of media, its concentration, and the temperature.
What Types Of Zirconium Pipe Fittings Are Available?
Elbows, tees, reducers, caps, crosses, couplings, unions, stub ends, forged fittings and socket weld fittings: all ten patterns come in zirconium.
What Standards Are Used For Zirconium Pipe Fittings?
ASTM B653 sets material requirements, ASME B16.9 and MSS SP-43 set butt weld dimensions, and ASME B16.11 covers forged patterns. Wall thickness comes from ASME B36.19.
How Do I Select The Right Zirconium Pipe Fittings?
Start with the media and its concentration, then temperature, then pressure class. Size, schedule, connection type and the governing standard follow from the piping specification.
